Art Therapy

Creativity is one of life’s biggest joys.

Art stimulates and enriches those struggling with memory loss and opens alternate pathways for expression and recollection. ADRC’s Art Programs introduce projects appropriate for people with Alzheimer’s and other cognitive impairments, using a hands-on approach.

The result? An experience that engages people, helping them retain their sense of self. The programs welcome family members and caregivers too, providing social connection and respite. To read more about the benefits and to complete a survey about participating in art therapy please click here.

ADRC’s Off Site Art Expression Program

ADRC provides art therapy training to recreational therapists and others who work at a wide variety of assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation homes, veterans’ residences and other centers. These individuals are then able to extend the benefit of art therapy to those in their own communities.

The 2023 – 2024 Art Expression Program will begin October 30, 2023. If you would like to have your organization or community participate please reach out to Carol Hartmann, at 631-580-5100 ext. 305. The program includes training for recreational therapists, program materials, and monthly zoom calls to provide support and themes. The program culminates in our Art Expression Exhibit.

Collage from our art therapy Program

I Remember Better When I Paint  is a feature length international documentary film about the positive impact of art and other creative therapies in people with Alzheimer’s disease and how these approaches can change the way the disease is viewed by society. The film examines the way creative arts bypass the limitations of dementia disorders such as Alzheimer’s and shows how patients’ still-vibrant imaginations are strengthened through therapeutic art. ADRC’s Art Expression program takes its inspiration from the film and having a friendship with Berna Huebner, who created the film about her mother’s journey – remembering better when she painted.

ADRC’s Annual Art Expression Showcase

Every year, ADRC hosts the Art Expression Program Art Exhibition. It’s a special celebration for the artists and their family members to view, celebrate and enjoy their creations. Artwork is featured from participants in all of our programs. This 2024 Art show took place at the Islip Arts Council the week of September 18 – September 30.

Next year’s Art Show will again be featured at the Islip Arts Council. Reception Date will be Friday, September 19, 2025.
